“Democracies die in daylight”. These letters shone silver on the evening gown worn by climate activist Luisa Neubauer on the red carpet at the 2025 Berlinale. On that February day, the year was still young, but hope had already turned grey and withered. In the USA, the motherland of modern democracy, a historic election had just shaken the constitutional state, giving new impetus to right-wing populist forces in Europe. And unfortunately, there is no change in the weather in sight: the enemies of democracy have the wind at their backs and are undermining the foundations of open and free society from both outside and within.

„Democracies die in daylight“. Silbern leuchteten diese Buchstaben auf dem Abendkleid, das Klimaktivistin Luisa Neubauer auf dem roten Teppich der Berlinale 2025  trug. An diesem Februartag war das Jahr zwar noch jung, aber die Hoffnung war schon grau und welk geworden. In den USA, dem Mutterland der modernen Demokratie, hatte gerade eine historische Wahl den Rechtsstaat ins Wanken gebracht und damit auch den rechtspopulistischen Kräften in Europa neuen Aufwind gegeben. Und bisher ist leider kein Wetterwechsel in Sicht: Die Feinde der Demokratie haben Rückenwind und sägen von außen wie von innen an den Grundfesten der offenen und freien Gesellschaft. 

The term ‘classical music’ spans almost a thousand years of cultural history and unites a variety of styles and tonal languages that couldn’t be more different from each other. Johann Sebastian Bach has about as much in common with Hector Berlioz as Dolly Parton has with David Bowie. But Sebastian and Hector have one thing in common: they were both men. To this day, the classical canon that is played in concert halls and taught in schools is predominantly male.

Der Begriff „Klassische Musik” umspannt fast tausend Jahre Kulturgeschichte und vereint verschiedene Stilrichtungen und Klangsprachen, die unterschiedlicher nicht sein könnten. Johann Sebastian Bach hat mit Hector Berlioz ungefähr genauso viel zu tun wie Dolly Parton mit David Bowie. Eines aber haben Sebastian und Hector gemeinsam: Beide waren Männer. Bis heute ist der klassische Kanon, der in den Konzerthäusern gespielt und an den Schulen gelehrt wird, vorwiegend männlich.
